Alice, San Diego rise in latest Caller-Times High School Football Power Rankings
Alice moved up in the Caller-Times Class 5A/4A High School Football Week 1 power rankings unveiled Tuesday.
The Coyotes were edged by state-ranked Veterans Memorial 22-20 at home to open the season and check in at No. 6 this week.
In the Class 3A/2A/Private School power rankings San Diego makes an appearance after a dominant showing against George West.
The Vaqueros won 33-13.
Caller-Times Class 5A/4A High School Football
1. Calallen (1-0)
The offensive line and running back Epi Hinojosa stole the show in Week 1's win against Gregory-Portland with a school-record 610 yards rushing.
2. Veterans Memorial (1-0)
Part of establishing your program is finding ways to win and the Eagles did that despite trailing for much of the game in a hostile environment against an improved Alice squad.
3. Flour Bluff (1-0)
The Hornets eased past Beeville behind a strong game from quarterback Nash Villegas.
4. Sinton (1-0)
The Pirates walloped Orange Grove as quarterback Rene Galvan was a handful, accounting for six total touchdowns.
5. Miller (1-0)
The Bucs offense grabs the headlines, but the Miller defense posted a shutout for the second straight season against rival Ray.
6. Alice (0-1)
The Coyotes were a handful of plays from a stunner to open the season, but Veterans Memorial wriggled away. Alice has another shot this week to make a statement against Victoria East.
7. Rockport-Fulton (1-0)
The Pirates took no prisoners against Aransas Pass as Ace Seibert and co. steamrolled the Panthers to open the season.
8. Moody (1-0)
The Trojans quietly went about their way in a solid win against Tuloso-Midway to open the year as Darrell Nation was stellar in the run and pass game.
9. Gregory-Portland (0-1)
G-P fought Calallen for more than two quarters before the second-ranked team in Class 4A Division I pulled away.
10. King (0-1)
The Mustangs defense came to play against San Antonio Lanier, holding the Voks to 13 points, but King fell just short in the opener.
Class 3A/2A/Private School
1. Refugio (1-0)
After a dominant win against Bruni, the Bobcats return to Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium for the first time since 2019.
2. Odem (1-0)
The Owls got off to a fast start with Hunter Dawson and Marcus Martinez shining in a win against West Oso.
3. London (1-0)
Ace Navarijo passed his first test as the new starting quarterback of the Pirates, leading the team to a win against Crosstown rival John Paul II.
4. San Diego (1-0)
The Vaqueros make a big statement in Week 1 with a convincing win against George West.
5. Orange Grove (0-1)
Bulldogs had a rough start against state-ranked Class 4A foe Sinton and have another 4A opponent on tap in Hidalgo.
