DISTRICT 15-5A DIVISION I

CARROLL AT VICTORIA WEST

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Memorial Stadium, 1110 Sam Houston Dr., Victoria

Records: Carroll 1-6, 1-5; West 5-1, 5-0

Last week: Flour Bluff 42, Carroll 14; Victoria West 49, Moody 21

What you need to know: Carroll amassed 147 yards rushing against the Hornets led by Jayden Smith (15 carries, 74 yards) and quarterback Gabriel Garza (13-57). Flour Bluff built a 42-0 lead by half. The Warriors scored on a blocked punt and an interception return before their offense took over after Moody had forged a 14-14 tie last week. West has averaged more than 53 points a game in district play behind running back Chase Patek and quarterback Blake Buzzell.

MOODY VS. KING

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Cabaniss Multipurpose Stadium

Records: Moody 3-4, 2-4; King 0-7, 0-6

Last week: Victoria West 49, Moody 21; Ray 14, King 7

What you need to know: Ray forced four turnovers to help hold off King in a defensive slugfest last week. Josiah King led the Mustangs with 73 yards while Ben Stewart threw for 59 yards and ran for 33. Victoria West scored on special teams and defense early as the Trojans were tied 14-14, before the Warriors closed the game on a 35-7 surge. The Moody rushing attack was held to 42 yards, but Jakota Cullum passed for 242 yards and two scores. Clarence McGill had two catches for 105 yards and a score and Darrell Nation finished with six catches for 96 yards and one touchdown.

CLASS 4A DIVISION I

NO. 3 CALALLEN VS. CANYON LAKE

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Eagle Stadium, Pleasanton

Records: Canyon Lake 6-5; Calallen 9-2

What you need to know: Calallen is playing its first game since Nov. 6 after La Grulla forfeited last week’s bi-district game. The Wildcats are ranked No. 3 in 4A Division I after capturing the District 15-4A Division I title with a win over Calhoun. This is the sixth consecutive season the Wildcats have at least advanced to the area round. Running back Jeremiah Earls has rushed for 1,172 yards and 12 touchdowns. Backup quarterback Luke Smith is expected to start with Terik Hickmon sidelined due to injury. Hickmon remains second on the team with 786 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. Canyon Lake is led by running back Jesse Horner, who rushed for 129 yards and five touchdowns in a bi-district win over La Vernia. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals to play the winner of Saturday's game between Alice and Austin LBJ. 

CLASS 4A DIVISION II

SINTON VS. GIDDINGS

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Gobbler Stadium, 920 E. Broadway St., Cuero

Records: Gidding 8-3; Sinton 7-3

Last week: Giddings 56, Gonzales 7; Sinton 57, Pearsall 8

What you need to know: This is the first playoff meeting between these two squads as Sinton is making its second straight playoff appearance under head coach Mike Troutman. Pirates junior running back Rylan Galvan has rushed for 1,404 yards this season with 16 touchdowns and is averaging 10.3 yards a carry this season. Galvan rushed for 220 yards and three TDs against Pearsall as the offense had 447 yards rushing. The Buffaloes are making their seventh straight playoff appearance and advanced to the third round in 2019.

ROCKPORT-FULTON VS. NAVASOTA

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Eddie Joseph Memorial Stadium, 1730 Stadium Road, Wharton

Records: Navasota 7-3; Rockport-Fulton 6-4

Last week: Navasota 72, Austin Achieve 7; Rockport-Fulton 38, Carrizo Springs 28

What you need to know: The Pirates running game rolled up 336 yards in its win against Carrizo Springs as John Chupe rushed for 192 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown. Overall this season, Chupe has rushed for 871 yards. The Rattlers, the No. 1 seed from District 13-4A Division II, is averaging 393 yards a game this season as running back Darius Randle has rushed for 1,150 yards and 13 touchdowns. This is the first playoff meeting between the two squads as the Pirates looking for a second-round win for the third straight season.

CLASS 3A DIVISION I

ORANGE GROVE VS. LAGO VISTA

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Bear Stadium, 221 San Antonio Road, La Vernia

Records: Lago Vista 7-3; Orange Grove 7-3

Last week: Lago Vista 26, Universal City Randolph 16; Orange Grove 56, San Diego 30

What you need to know: The Bulldogs won their first playoff game since 2015 last week as they lost in the first round the last four seasons. Orange Grove receiver Conner Eulenfeld caught 16 passes for 220 yards in the win over the Vaqueros and had four touchdowns. The Bulldogs are averaging nearly 500 yards a game on offense this season. Lago Vista is the No. 2 seed from District 13-3A and is on a three-game winning streak.

CLASS 3A DIVISION II

GEORGE WEST VS. BUFFALO

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Brahmas Memorial Stadium, 1331 Fourth Street, Hallettsville

Records: Buffalo 10-1; George West 6-4

Last week:  Buffalo 34, Rice Consolidated 27; George West 49, Odem 12

What you need to know: The Longhorns have their work cutout for them in this area round match as the Bison average 380 yards a game on offense and is led by quarterback Brett Hoffman. Hoffman has completed 129 of 209 passes for 2,482 yards and 26 touchdowns to nine interceptions. George West is making its fifth straight trip to the second round and is looking for a second straight victory.

TAFT VS. LEXINGTON

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Where: Bulldog Stadium, 102 Koether Drive No. 2, Yoakum

Records: Lexington 7-3; Taft 8-3

Last week: Lexington 7, East Bernard 0, 2 OT; Taft 20, Stockdale 14

What you need to know: The Greyhounds are making their second straight appearance in the postseason and looking to win a third-round game for the first time since 1982. Taft topped Stockdale last week as Jermiah Sanchez and Sean Suarez combined for three rushing TDs in the victory. Lexington is the No. 4 seed out of District 13-3A Division II and 335 yards a game this season. Jarred Kerr leads the Eagles with 1,042 yards and 13 touchdowns. Also Taft coach JR Castellano was named the Hispanic Texas High School Football Coaches Association Coach of the Week.
