HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

CLASS 3A DIVISION II

BI-DISTRICT

GEORGE WEST 49, ODEM 12

What this game means: George West (6-4) won a playoff game for the fifth consecutive season, dispatching District 16-3A Division I champion Odem in a game played in Mathis. The Longhorns lost more than two games in a season for the first time since 2016, but played like a battle-tested team against the Owls. Odem, despite reeling off four straight wins and seven of eight, saw their district championship season come to an end at 7-4.

Friday's highlights: George West's John Zuniga took the second half kickoff back for a touchdown to put Odem in a deep hole, trailing 28-6 early in the third quarter. The Longhorns defense, spearheaded by linebacker Ryan Thomisee, stopped two promising Odem drives at the 20 and the 18 to open the game. In turn the Longhorns got a 27-yard touchdown jaunt from Michael Upton and an 82-yard sprint up the middle for a score from quarterback Jake Snider. The Owls answered with a keeper from quarterback Hunter Dawson and got the ball back with a chance to tie the game before half, but it was George West that scored late on a 3-yard pass from Snider to Steven Gonzales. The Longhorns held the momentum for the duration.

George West's Jake Snider runs with the ball and scores a touchdown at the playoff game against Odem, Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, in Mathis. George West won, 49-12.

Friday's stars: Adding a pair of highlight-reel touchdown scampers in the second half, Snider finished with 178 yards and four touchdowns on seven carries. He added a passing touchdown, having a hand in five of the Longhorns' seven scores. Upton (seven carries, 63 yards) and Zuniga (5-43) were also key in George West's 343-yard night on the ground. Dawson (24-101) and Mark Moreno (18-118) topped the century mark on the ground for Odem.

George West coach Brent Kornegay on what went right for the Longhorns: "I think more than anything we came together as a team. We've been preaching that all week long — 'You've got to play for each other. Get the 'I' out of everything and get the 'we.' That is exactly what we did. It was a good overall win for our program."

George West quarterback Jake Snider on what the bi-district win meant: "It was a huge deal. The past weeks have been tough. We had to come together as a team. Our linemen did great, they gave me enough time in the pocket. Our receivers, the line. Defense was exquisite.

"All that excitement from getting a stop to turn it over (on downs) for the offense and then we can go down and score."

Up next: George West (6-4) will face Buffalo (10-1) at a site, date and time to be determined. Odem finishes the season 7-4.
