HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER

CLASS 4A BI-DISTRICT

ALICE 6, EDINBURG IDEA QUEST 0

What this game means: Alice advances to the Class 4A area round for the first time since 2012 with Friday's win against Edinburg IDEA Quest. The Coyotes improved to 14-5 and will play either Monte Alto or IDEA Riverview at a time, date and location to be announced later. Friday's match was also the first playoff game for Alice since 2012.

Friday's highlights: Alice sophomore Romario Arellano set the tone offensively by scoring the game's first points in the second minute of play. Both defenses kept the game scoreless until the 36th minute when Alice senior Jacob Lopez scored his first of two goals. Arellano recorded assists for both of the senior captain's scores. Arellano added his second goal two minutes later to give the Coyotes a 3-0 halftime lead. Alice goalkeeper Tiger Ortiz recorded three of his six saves in the first half to spark the Coyotes' defensive effort in the first half. Junior forward Ashton Neal scored the Coyotes' first goal of the second half to make it 4-0 in the 43rd minute. Francisco Castillo added another Alice goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute and Lopez scored his final goal in the 76th to secure the scoring for Alice.

Friday's stars: The Coyotes' scoring was supplied by Lopez and Arellano, who each delivered two goals. Neal added another goal and Castillo connected on a penalty kick to pace the offense. Keeper Ortiz secured the shutout and finished with six saves. Arellano assisted both of Lopez' goals with both of his scores coming unassisted.

Alice coach Juan Rivadeneyra on the Coyotes' bi-district win: "I'm very happy for these guys. We've always told them that with hard work, you're not guaranteed victories but you're always guaranteed to be competitive. When you're competitive, you got a chance every game. At halftime, we were up three goals but the guys understood it was only a three-shot game... We always treat every goal and each half as a game... If we win both halves, we win the game. Our goal was to get a shutout today. If they don't score, we win. Bottom line."

Alice senior Jacob Lopez on the Coyotes' first playoff win since 2012: "It's a dream come true to be honest. I've always had a dream to go to the playoffs in high school and I'm finally doing it. In my four years at Alice High School, I've worked my butt off and it's paying off. We're a good team and we're all young. We've practiced hard all year as a team."
