In beating the Alice Junior League all-stars Thursday night, Falfurrias awoke a sleeping giant.

Alice returned to Optimists Park Friday night and returned the favor to Falfurrias twice, winning back-to-back games, 25-4 and 13-3. The Alice all-stars scored 38 runs in the two games, but their effort was punctuated by a long home run by Selina Moreida in the first game Friday. On the mound, Alice relied on the arms of Zalysa Perez, Ashley Ramirez and Moreida. On Thursday, Falfurrias pulled off an upset by beating Alice, 5-3, to force the doubleheader Friday.

By winning the District 22 championship, the Alice all-stars move on to a sectionals tournament, which will also be held here in Alice beginning Monday. The tournament will include Alice, as well as all-stars teams from San Antonio, Laredo, the Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi. Alice will play its first game in the tournament Tuesday when they meet up with the winner of the San Antonio-Laredo match-up, which is being played here at 8 p.m. Monday. The first game of the tournament Monday includes Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley.

In baseball, the Alice American 12-year-old all-stars lost to Falfurrias, 10-5, in an elimination game Friday night at Bobby Cuellar Park.

Ronnie Chavarria came in in relief in the top of the first inning and went on to shutout Falfurras, striking out seven batters along the way. However, his effort was a little too late as Falfurrias had already scored 10 runs.

John Michael Gonzalez set the tone of that first inning for Falfurrias, knocking out a three-run home run. Also hitting for Falfurrias were Dusty Figueroa, who went 3-for-4 and Albert Hernandez, who went 2-for-4. Shortstop Christopher Castillo also had four defensive stops with bases loaded to preserve Falfurrias' lead.

With the victory, Falfurrias advances to the tournament finals where they met up with unbeaten Alice National Saturday evening. Results from that game were unavailable at press time.

Also Friday night, the Alice National 9- and 10-year-old all-stars knocked off Alice American and captured the District 22 championship in the process.

The National all-stars won the championship game, 17-15. The team now advances to sectionals play Monday in Laredo.
