A local Robstown boxer will be taking the fight to Edinburg next week as he looks to maintain his perfect record as a professional fighter.
Twenty-year-old Greg Gutierrez is coming off his third victory as a pro boxer. The Robstown native fought Francisco Chavez in San Antonio earlier this month, knocking his opponent out 28 seconds into the second round.
Gutierrez is 3-0, with two KOs, since becoming a professional boxer. His first pro fight was on Sept. 11, and was a bit of a change for the fighter who had dominated the amateur circuit.
"When you come out…it's just a crazy experience," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez has been fighting since he was nine years old, with his brother and father former boxers as well. Gutierrez's father is in his son's corner every fight, the young boxer said, and manages his son's career.
"I trust him with everything," the younger Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez, who is married, has a son who recently turned one. The child was his primary reason for going pro, Gutierrez said.
"I don't want my son to fight," Gutierrez said, adding that he would ultimately leave that decision with his son.
For now, the Robstown native will stay focused on his career and keeping his perfect record intact.
"I know I'm going to be something," he said. "It's just a matter of time."
Gutierrez will be fighting at Edinburg Municipal Park on April 16.
