With a little luck on his birthday, Alice High School senior golfer Juan Gonzalez could earn himself a trip to the Class 4A state championship.
After the first round of the Region IV-4A tournament at the Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio Wdednesday, Gonzalez is in seventh place. He shot a first-day scored of 74, just three over par. He was on pace to finish his first round near par at 71, but a double bogey in the back nine dropped him back.
The top two teams and the top two individual scorers advance to the state golf tournament. With the top inidvidual scores belonging to tournament leaders Boerne Champion and Lake Travis, Gonzalez stands a decent shot at qualifying to state with a solid score Thursday, Alice coach Adan Canales said.
“Juan did really well,” Canales said. “He’s excited. Today’s his birthday, so maybe he’ll have a little birthday magic. He needs a good score today. I think he’s already golfed a lot better here than he did in district. Everyone on our team has.”
With a team score of 317, Alice is in 10th place out of a total of 16 teams from the eight districts in Region IV.
For Alice, Reuben Lopez and Kenneth Barrera each shot scores of 82 Wednesday. Ron Garza shot an 89 and Raul Garcia had a first-day score of 102.
