Sixteen teams ranging in classification from Class 5A to 2A make up the field in this year's Lady Coyotes' Invitational.

The basketball tournament, which begins Friday morning at Alice High School, drew teams from as far away as San Antonio, El Campo, Laredo and Edinburg. The tournament begins with first round games Friday morning spread out over two gyms.

For the host team, tournament play begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the Game 1 at Alice High School's new gym. The Lady Coyotes will take on Class 2A Three Rivers in that game. The winner of that contest will take on the winner of the Edinburg-Laredo LBJ game later in the day.

Saturday's games begin at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament concludes at 7 p.m. with a championship game. Alice lost to Alvin in the championship game last season.

Alice coach Tracy Zamora said the tournament is loaded with talented teams and should make for a challenging weekend.

"But that's what we want right now," Zamora said. "We want to play some good teams and we want the two very best teams to end up playing for the championship."
