The Alice Lady Coyotes’ softball postseason begins in the Rio Grande Valley next Friday.

Alice is matched up against District 32-4A runner-up Mercedes in a best-of-three bi-district playoff series.

Game 1 of the series is Friday, April 29, in Mercedes. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The series comes to Alice Saturday, April 30, for a noon game. If needed, Game 3 will follow 30 minutes after Game 2.

Mercedes finished the 32-4A race in second place one game behind Edcouch-Elsa. The Lady Tigers did split their series against Edcouch-Elsa, which was ranked No. 24 in 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll this week.

It’ll be the Lady Coyotes first match-up against Mercedes this season. They eliminated Edcouch-Elsa in the first round of the playoffs last year in three games. Alice went three rounds into the postseason in 2010.

The Lady Coyotes wrapped up a playoff bid Monday night by beating Kingsville, 6-1, and claiming third place in 31-4A. Alice finished the district season 6-6.

Alice coach April Atterberry said the Lady Coyotes are playing their best softball of the season right now. It showed Monday against Kingsville. The Lady Coyotes totaled 13 hits and had a solid pitching performance by Selina Moreida. She threw the entire seven innings. She allowed one earned run and five hits, but struck out six.

Alice senior catcher Micaela Valadez, a four-year starter, said the Lady Coyotes had a complete game against the Lady Brahmas.

“It’s a big deal and exciting,” Valadez said. “We played better than we have in a while. We’ve been in this slump, but we finally put it all together.”
