ROBSTOWN – The Agua Dulce Longhorn baseball team lost 12-1 in a district match up to the San Patria Trojans at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown. The loss eliminates the Longhorns from the State playoffs.

Andres Pacheco took the mound for the Longhorns and pitched a shut-out through the first four innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth he'd move into scoring position off a triple. Marrissa Gonzalez would drive him in off a double to take the 1-0 lead.

The Trojans would take over in the fifth, scoring three runs off two RBIs and a throwing error. Pacheco continued to pitch a good game, striking out 14 batters by the end of the night. But the Longhorn's fielding gave up too many errors for it to matter. The Trojans would continue to grab extra bases off wild throws, giving them nine runs in the final two inning for the 12-1 final score.

While the season will end without a playoff berth, the team's attitude viewed the loss as a missed opportunity instead of a disappointment. It was the first time in three years the Agua Dulce baseball program will be able to finish a complete season.

“We're just blessed that we managed to accomplished something that hasn't been done in the last few years,” said Coach Vivis. “We've had the full support of the administration, the parents, and the community to get these 25 guys a chance to play.”

Gonzalez, one of few girls to play baseball in the area, echoed her coach's view.

“It's a big thing for everybody. I wanted to give everyone a chance to do something that had never been done before,” she said. “I just wanted all of us to play ball and love it.”

The Longhorns will face the Ben Bolt Badgers on Thursday for their season finale.

The outcome will not affect any playoff scenarios, but the Longhorns are happy to finish the year and look forward to next season.

“We almost made it,” said Vivis.

“There's nothing to be ashamed of. We're coming back next year strong.”
