R.J. Carrillo became the third Coyote to commit to the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and the fourth on his team to commit to a D1 School.
The two year Letterman will join junior Jacob Guzman and senior Isaiah Aguilar on the Vaqueros Stadium in Edinburg, Texas.
"It’s going to be great," Carrillo said. "We already have that chemistry built up from high school ball and it will be easy to transfer it to the next level."
Choosing UTRGV was an easy choice for Carrillo, second baseman who plays other positions as well. Carrillo comes into this season with a .294 batting average with 68 hits, six doubles, two triples and two homeruns. He also has 21 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. In 2019, he was selected First Team All District Utility Player and All South Texas Utility Honorable Mention.
""It’s not that far from home, so my family can see my games and the hospitality was very good," Carrillo said. "I had a good vibe with the coaches which really persuaded my decision."
Carrillo plans on pursuing a biology major in hopes to become a physician’s assistant. He still has one more year in a Coyotes uniform.
Junior Jacob Guzman will also dawn the orange uniform before going to UTRGV. He committed to the Vaqueros his freshman year, when he was named Co-Newcomer of the Year. In 2019, he was named First Team All District Pitcher and Honorable Mention All South Texas Pitcher. Recently, he was named 2020 High Honorable Mention Pre-Season All American in the U.S. and 2020 Pre-Season All American Honorable Mention Texas Region.
Aside from pitching, Guzman also plays both outfield and infield positions. He has a .258 batting average with 41 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, a home-run and 19 RBIs. He also has 15 stolen bases. He has pitched 111.2 innings in 22 starts, 110 strikeouts with a 10 wins, a 3.84 ERA and has pitched eight complete games. His fastball has been clocked at 89mph.
Senior Isaiah Aguilar will have been a Vaquero a full season when Carrillo and Guzman arrive. the short stop and pitcher has played varsity since his freshman year and currently has a .290 batting average. He has 68 hits with 12 doubles, four triples, one home-run 41 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. He’s pitched 60 innings in 14 games with 57 strikeouts with a fastball clocked at 88mph.
Aguilar was named 2017 Second Team All District shortstop as a freshman, 2018 Honorable Mention All District SS, 2019 Honorable Mention All District SS and 2020 Perfect Games All American Underclass. He was also recently named 2020 Pre-Season All American Honorable Mention Texas Region.
The fourth player to commit to a D1 school is junior pitcher Sai Campos. Campos committed to the University of the Incarnate Word. His current batting average is .230 with 37 hits with two doubles, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He’s pitched 58 innings in 11 games with 65 strikeouts and his fastball has been clocked at 88mph.
As a freshman in 2018, Campos was named Second Team All District outfielder. In 2019, he was named All District Honorable Mention Pitcher and has been named Perfect Game All American Under Class two years in a row. He was also recently named 2020 High Honorable Mention Pre-Season All American in the U.S. and 2020 Pre-Season All American Honorable Mention Texas Team.
