After defeating La Villa on Tuesday night, the Premont Cowboys are making their second appearance in a row to the Area round of the 2A playoffs when they face Weimar in Beeville.

Last year’s match against Flatonia resulted in a loss. Tonight, Coach Martin Gonzalez is confident that there will be different results.

“They (Weimar) have a good forward that everything goes through,” Gonzalez said. “Number zero is their man. Everything goes through that guy.”

With top scorers Jordan Gonzalez, Joey Naranjo and Lucas Rogers leading the way, Coach Gonzalez believes his team can set the pace of the game.

“It’s going to be a very high intensity, fast game,” Gonzalez said. “It’s the playoffs and that’s what you expect, especially in the second round.”

Tuesday game against La Villa, the Cowboys struggled in the first half, down by 8 points at half time but came back with a 19 – 4 run in the third quarter to regain the lead.

The junior, Jordan Gonzalez led the team with 15 points. Juniors Lucas Rogers and Joey Naranjo contributed 13 and 10 points of their own and freshman Aiden Sanchez added 5 points. The final score was 57 – 51.

Gonzalez said of the 19 points scored during the third quarter, 12 of those points were scored on the defensive side through blocks and rebounds.

“That was a big thing for us,” Gonzalez said. “That kind of set the tone for the rest of the game.”

“That’s been our big plus the whole year. Our defense has been amazing. Our offense revolves around our defense,” Gonzalez said. “If we stop playing defense, that’s going to hurt us overall.”
