Alice High School had several athletes advance to the area track and field meet in the field events portion of the District 29-5A championships in Laredo Tuesday.

Running preliminaries at the District 29-5A meet were set for late Tuesday afternoon. Results from those events were not immediately available. Running events finals are Wednesday at Shirley Field in Laredo.

The area meet is in Alice’s Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, April 17. The meet will feature qualifiers from District 29-5A and 30-5A. Top finishers at the area meet advance to the Region IV championships.

Alice High School senior Julie Sepulveda qualified to the area meet in the shot put and discus. She was set in the shot put and missed winning the district championship by an inch. Alice junior Kayla Escobar was third in the event. Sepulveda edged Escobar for fourth place in the discus. Escobar was fifth and missed qualifying in the event.

Alice junior Devin Winfrey advanced in the shot put. He was third. Junior Isaiah Aguilar placed second in the long jump to qualify to the area meet.

Sarina Cantu, a junior, narrowly missed advancing in the long jump and triple jump. She was fifth in both events.

Alice long distance runners Tania Lillich and Samuel Salinas advanced in the 3,200-meter run. Tillich was fourth in the girls’ run and Salinas was fourth in the boys’ race.
