The San Diego Vaqueros entered the boys state powerlifting meet as the team to beat. Turns out, no one even came close.
San Diego won its program’s fifth team state championship at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division 3 meet in Abilene Saturday. Behind two individual state championships and a handful of other top finishes, the Vaqueros easily topped the team totals with 22 points. Second-place Edinburg Idea College Prep had only 12.
Anthony Perez and Lee Bazan won individual championships. Perez won the 148-pound weight class. It was his third-straight individual state championship. He won with a total of 1,615 pounds. Bazan won the 165-pound weight class with a total of 1,510 pounds. Bazan broke records in his weight class with a 635-pound squat and a deadlift of 505 pounds.
Michael Salaiz was second in the 275-pound weight class with a total of 1,780 pounds. Joseph Araujo was third in the 198-pound weight class with a 1,520-pound total.
Coach Bo Ochoa, who years ago helped turn powerlifting into a cornerstone of the San Diego program, knew going into the state meet that this year’s had had the potential to win a team championship. However, he couldn’t have imagined the dominating performance the boys put together Saturday.
“The boys lifted really well,” Ochoa said. “There was a good level of competition, so the team had to lift more than what we had done before to keep up, but they did it.”
The state title is San Diego’s fifth in boys powerlifting. San Diego also has two in girls powerlifting.
