Not many teams can boast about having a day like the one the Lady Coyotes had in the first round of the Mira’s Bayfront Bash.

The Alice girls began Thursday by beating London. 1-0. They then avenged back-to-back losses to South Texas powerhouse Corpus Christi Moody with a 15-0 shutout win. They followed that up with a 4-0 shutout win against Class 3A defending state champion Santa Gertrudis Academy. At the time, it was only Academy’s second loss to the season.

Pitcher Sam Hinojosa gave up only three hits while shutting out Academy. Hanah Rodriguez was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Kayla Hernandez had an RBI in the win.

Escobar was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the win against Moody. Sarina Cantu and Meaghan Molina were each 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Escobar also had an RBI is the win against London.

The Lady Coyotes ended up winning two and losing two over the next day to end the tournament.

On Friday, Alice lost to Harlingen South, 10-2, and beat Houston Chavez, 10-2. Alice then beat Bishop, 4-3, on a walk-off single by Hinojosa Saturday. The Lady Coyotes lost to Carroll, 9-0, in the final game of the tournament.

The Lady Coyotes opened district play Tuesday night on the road against Tuloso-Midway. Alice is at home Friday against Flour Bluff. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
