Things simply didn’t go the Alice Lady Coyotes’ way from the start Monday night.

It began early in the first inning of the team’s season opener against perennial softball powerhouse Corpus Christi Moody.

With bases loaded and no outs, Moody clean-up hitter Emily Garza slapped a grounder to shortstop. The throw seemingly came home in time, but in stretching to make the play, Alice starting catcher Maylynn Saenz went down with an injured wrist and had to leave the game. With a run on the scoreboard already and bases still loaded, the Lady Coyotes had to shift part of their defense around. That scenario combined with a cold front that blew in with a light drizzle served as a foreshadowing for a tough evening.

The Lady Trojans ended up leaving Alice with a 9-1 victory on the first night of the 2019 softball season.

The Lady Coyotes’ lone run came in the bottom of the first inning. Lead-off batter Samantha Hinojosa drew a walk. She then advanced to third on a past ball and scored on a fly ball by Hailey Garza and another Moody error.

Hinojosa was Alice’s starting pitcher and took the loss. At the plate, Hinojosa and Kayla Hernandez were 2-for-3.

The Lady Coyotes are back on the field this weekend at the Medina Valley softball tournament.
