The Freer Lady Buckaroos were victorious Friday, but the win against Agua Dulce didn’t come easy. In fact, Freer had to hold off a furious rally by Agua Dulce down the stretch to preserve the 35-32 win.

The two teams finished the District 31-2A season as co-champions with identical 9-1 records. Friday’s game in Alice was to determine playoff seeding.

Freer moves into the bi-district round as 31-2A top seed where it will face La Villa. The playoff game is Tuesday in Kingsville. Agua Dulce is matched-up against San Perlita at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dome A at H.M. King High School.

The Lady Buckaroos went ahead of the Lady Longhorns in the first quarter, 9-6, Friday night. A three-pointer by Haley Viera was the difference in the period.

Hannah Viera helped Freer maintain its lead with seven points in the second quarter. Agua Dulce kept things close thanks to five points by Megan Calvez and five by Amberlynn Ortega in the period. Ortega was 3-for-3 from the free thrown line before halftime.

The Lady Buckaroos led, 20-81, at halftime, but they pulled ahead in the third by outscoring the Lady Longhorns, 9-3. Agua Dulce fought back in the fourth thanks to a nine-point effort by Ortega.

Hannah Viera led Freer with nine. Haley Viera had eight and Cameron Cantu had six.

Ortega finished the game with 14 points. Calvez had seven and Giselle Perez had five. Mikayla Uribe scored four.
