The only thing standing between the Laredo Martin Tigers and the District 29-5A championship Tuesday night was Alice.

The Tigers came into the Alice High School gym with a share of first place in 29-5A, but they needed a win to claim the crown outright. Martin scored 97 points against Alice earlier this season, and they didn’t let up by much this time around. The Tigers quickly pulled away from the Coyotes for an 81-60 victory Tuesday night.

Martinez remained perfect in district with a 10-0 record. Alice dropped to 2-8 and 10-20 for the season.

The Tigers were overpowering from the start. They ran up an 18-5 lead in the first period and they raced to 40-20 lead by halftime. Martin led 65-34 at the start of the fourth. Alice cut into the lead in the fourth with a 24-point quarter.

John Leija led Alice’s offense with 18 points. Ramiro Chavez had 11 points and Joey Gonzalez scored eight.

Winder Vasquez paced the Tigers with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Carlos Cortinas had 14 points, including four three-pointers. Kevin Garcia and Mathew Duron each had 13 points.
