The San Diego Lady Vaqueros were a win away from the Class 3A state softball tournament last year.

San Diego lost to Santa Gertrudis Academy in the Class 3A, Region IV finals and Academy went on to win the state title a week later.

The Lady Vaqueros reputation and the girls the team is returning was enough to earn the team some preseason respect in the first Texas Girls Coaches Association softball poll of the season. San Diego is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A. Academy is No. 1 on the poll.

San Diego and Academy was two of only three South Texas teams ranked in the first poll of the season. Beeville’s AC Jones is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A.
