THREE RIVERS — Another big first quarter helped the Alice Coyotes to another win Thursday.

This time, the Coyotes jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first period and held on for a 77-69 victory against Carrizo Springs in the first round of the Three Rivers basketball tournament Thursday.

The Coyotes led 22-11 in the first period and maintained their 11-point advantage at halftime. Carrizo Spring cut into Alice’s lead in the fourth quarter, but Alice held on for the win.

Senior John Leija had a big night, scoring 38 points. Ramiro Chavez scored 12 and Jared Siprian scored 11. Austin Garcia had nine.

The win was the Alice boys’ second-consecutive win after beating Banquete Tuesday night.

The Coyotes will continue the tournament Friday. They hit the court for an 8:30 a.m. game against Pettus and an 11:30 a.m. game against Three Rivers.
