SAN DIEGO — The Mathis Pirates have long been a thorn in the side of the San Diego Vaqueros.

The last two times that San Diego was in the postseason, it was Mathis that ended their run. That all changed Friday night. This time, San Diego beat Mathis, 24-0, in their regular-season finale to claim second place and a playoff spot in District 16-3A, Div. I.

San Diego (8-2) will face Jourdanton in the bi-district round of the Class 3A, Div. I playoff at Flour Bluff High School at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Vaqueros beat the 3-7 Pirates with a steady offense and a solid defense.

Running back Anthony Perez rushed for 170 yards on 30 carries and one touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Ochoa rushed for 100 yards on nine carries. He also completed five fo 15 passes for 90 yards.

Defensively, the Vaqueros had their third shutout of the season. Through 10 games, San Diego has allowed only 69 points.
