The Alice High School gymnasium is out of commission for now because of water damage from a leak.
A water line ruptured earlier this week which leaked water underneath the entire floor. The gym floor is wooden and multi-layered. Some of the layers include different forms of wood and foam. Any kind of water leak can seriously damage a gym floor.
Rainbow International Fire and Water Restoration was handling the water and moisture removal. The doorways into the gym were blocked off by Wednesday and Thursday hoses, fans and dehumidifiers. Work on drying the floor is expected to continue for some time.
Alice athletic director Kyle Atwood said the district is hoping to salvage the floor.
“We have to see if it’s something that we can restore and repair and maybe use until the spring or if it’s something that we’ll have to replace right away,” he said. “We don’t know yet.”
For now, the gym is unusable. The Alice volleyball teams — varsity, junior varsity and freshmen — will share the old gym. During tournaments, Alice has used the William Adams Middle School gym for games, so that's a possibility as well. The Alice volleyball team’s next home game is Tuesday against San Diego. As of Thursday afternoon, the game is set to be played in the school’s old gym.
More recently, the work on the floor forced Alice High School to move its pep rally from Friday to Thursday and at Memorial Stadium.
