The Alice High School varsity 7-on-7 summer football team is playing for a spot in the state tournament.

The Texas State 7-on-7 qualifying tournament is Saturday at Gregory-Portland High School. A total of 24 teams are playing in the tournament.

Alice is beginning the tournament in pool play. The Alice team is in the same pool with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, Gregory-Portland and Seguin. The pool play games are at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. at Ray Akins Wildcats Stadium in Portland.

The winner of the pool advances to the tournament semifinals. The top three teams from the tournament move on to the Texas State 7-on-7 tournament in College Stadium later this month.

Alice is currently playing in a weekly 7-on-7 league with Coastal Bend teams including district teams Calallen and Tuloso-Midway. Since the beginning, Alice coach Kyle Atwood has said he wants his 7-on-7 teams to focus on running the Coyotes’ offense and defense and use the experience to improve. He said that is Alice’s game plan going into the state qualifying tournament.

“We’re sticking to our offense and our defense,” he said. “Of course, just like in everything we do, be it a lineman challenge or a 7-on-7 game, we want to compete to win. We’re going to compete as we would on a Friday night. In the end, we just want to go out there and keep getting better at running routes, throwing and catching.”
