San Diego High School recently honored its athletes at its annual banquet, and seniors Marlena Martinez and Ryan Briones were given the program’s top honors.

Martinez was named Miss Vaquero and Briones was named Mr. Vaquero. The awards are given to the program’s top female and male athletes of the year.

Martinez, who recently signed to play college basketball at Coastal Bend College in Beeville, was First Team All-District and All-Academic in volleyball. She was a regional qualifier in cross country and an area and regional qualifier in track and field in the 300-meter hurdles.

In basketball, Martinez was the 30-3A MVP and First Team All-South Texas. She was also an All-Region selection and All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Martinez was also selected to play in the Coastal Bend Coaches Association All-Star basketball game this weekend.

Briones was First Team All-District in 16-3A and an All-South Texas Honorable Mention.

He was All-District in basketball and part of the San Diego boys golf team that advanced to regionals.

In baseball, Briones was an All-District first baseman and a regional qualifier in the track and field in the long jump.

Briones was selected for the Coastal Bend Coaches Association All-Star Game.
