The Alice Coyotes were sitting on a 3-0 lead in the bottom the fifth inning when pinch-hitter Josh Trevino opened things up.

The tall and rangy left-handed batter was facing a 2-2 count when he was served up a fast ball which he sent to left field. Trevino’s hit scored two runs and paced the way for an eight-run rally in the fifth inning.

The big inning shut the door on any kind of comeback by the George West Longhorns and gave the Coyotes an 11-0 win in the first day of the Whataburger of Alice Classic. The tournament is being played at the Alice Coyote Baseball Complex and Banquete High School.

Pool play continues Friday. Alice is playing Flour Bluff at 2:30 p.m. The tournament finals are Saturday.

Freshman Esai Campos was the inning pitcher for the Coyotes against Goliad. He gave up two hits and two walks through five innings. He also struck out six.

The Coyotes had seven hits. Isaiah Aguilar and Matt Saenz were each 2-for-4. Aguilar had two RBIs and  Saenz had three. Trevino and Aaron Arellano had two RBIs each.

Campos led Alice at the plate against Cigarroa, going 3-for-3. The Coyotes topped the Toros, 7-2, Friday.
