CORPUS CHRISTI —For the second year in a row, the Alice Lady Coyotes’ season has ended been ended by the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles.

However, Friday night’s District 30-5A interzone match between the Lady Coyotes and the Eagles was dramatically different than their meeting a year ago.

When the two teams meet in the interzone game last year to determine which team was moving on to the Class 5A state playoffs, Veterans Memorial completely dominated Alice and easily won, 55-31. This year’s contest wasn’t so one-sided. In fact, it was anyone game until midway through the fourth period.

Veterans Memorial took control in the fourth and went on to win, 57-42, but the Lady Coyotes led early on.

The Eagles, ranked 19th in Class 5A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, came into Friday’s game with back-to-back losses to South Zone rival Flour Bluff. They were sluggish in the start Friday night and Alice jumped out to a 12-7 first-period lead. Veterans rallied in the second period and went up 24-22 at halftime.

Taylor Blum led the Lady Coyotes in scoring with 15 points. Katy Buentello scored 10. Criselda Cruz scored eight and Alyssa Lazo scored seven.

Veterans Memorial outscored Alice, 28-20, in the second half.

The Eagles improved to 30-6 for the season. Alice ended its season, 21-14.
