Alice is competing at the District 30-5A swimming and diving championships Saturday, and if things go their way, a handful of competitors could be moving on to regionals.

The district meet is at the Corpus Christi Natatorium Saturday. Warm-ups are at 9:15 a.m. followed by the start of the meet at 10:30 a.m.

Alice is competing against the district’s other schools. The top finishers qualify to the upcoming regional meet and the top finishers at regionals move on to the state meet.

Alice has a returning state qualifier in diver Greg Rodriguez. Rodriguez won last year’s district meet, placed at regionals and then competed at the state meet. Competing in the 1-meter dive, Rodriguez had won several meets leading up to the district meet, including the City of Alice’s Holiday Classic at the Alice Multi-Use Complex.

On the girls side, swimmer Hanna Hayslip, a senior, is a favorite to place at the district meet at move on to regionals. She’s a favorite in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-butterfly stroke.

At the recent Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association swim meet, which is comparable to regional competition, Hayslip placed sixth in both individual events.

Hayslip also swims legs in the Alice girls’ 200-meter freestyle relay and 400-meter freestyle relay along with sophomores Mariella Villarreal, Mireya Villarreal and senior Alyssa Ramon.
