SAN DIEGO — As one of the top small schools in South Texas, the Odem Lady Owls represented a mid-season challenge for the San Diego Vaqueros.

However, this San Diego team is for real and well-deserving of their state-ranking. The Lady Vaqueros, ranked No. 11 in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 3A poll, fought off the Lady Owls for a decisive 36-26 victory Tuesday night.

The contest was tight midway through, but San Diego was able to gain a 21-18 edge by halftime. The Lady Vaqueros pulled away in the second half with a 15-8 run.

Leandra Bazan accounted for 11 points for San Diego. Marley Martinez had eight points and Laura Canales had seven.

The win means San Diego closes its non-district schedule with an impressive 21-3 mark.

The Lady Vaqueros are open Friday before beginning District 16-3A on the road Tuesday against Cotulla and Friday at George West.

San Diego’s first district home game is next Tuesday against Dilley.
