Despite rushing just 10 times, bruising running back Luis Lopez tallied 92 yards on the ground and two touchdowns to lead Texas A&M University-Kingsville (6-3, 4-3 LSC) past Eastern New Mexico University 41-28 Saturday. For his efforts, the junior back from San Diego was named Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The Javelinas earned their fourth consecutive conference win for the first time since 2010. In the game, Lopez collected a 24 yard touchdown rush in the second quarter to score Kingsville's first TD and he also put the stamp on the victory with 44 yards on three plays late in the fourth. In that sequence, Lopez rushed for a season-high 40 yards on the second play to bring the Hogs to the ENMU 1.
Lopez is the second Javelina to earn LSC Offensive Player of the Week, joining Myles Carr, who won after the season opening victory at the University of the Incarnate Word. Brandon Jones and Alex Kuyinu were LSC Defensive Player of the Week nods two weeks ago and last week, respectively.
Lopez and Texas A&M-Kingsville host Western New Mexico University Nov. 5 in the last regular season home game at Javelina Stadium. Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, 20 seniors will be honored for their contributions to the football program.
