The Alice Coyotes are getting one more home game this season.
Alice is playing Corpus Christi Moody at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 in Memorial Stadium. The Week 11 match-up is the product of District 30-5A’s zone play format. The game pits the fourth-place finisher from each Zone. However, the game is not for one of the district's four playoff spots.
With a zone game left to play before the season finale for both teams, Alice is fourth in the North Zone with a 1-3 record. Moody is four in the South Zone with a 1-2 mark.
Alice would have liked to be playing in one of the top three zone match-ups for a postseason bid, but coach Justen Evans said just having an opportunity to play in Memorial Stadium one more time this season is a special event, especially for the program’s seniors.
“I thought it was important for us to get to play at home one more time,” Evans said. “It gives our seniors one more game at home, and it’s one more opportunity for our band to have a performance at home, one more chance for our cheerleaders and drill team to perform at home. It’s just really good for the entire community.”
Initially, Corpus Christi coaches offered Buc Stadium for the Alice-Moody game, but Evans opted to flip for the site of the game and won the coin toss.
Alice is playing on the road against Tuloso-Midway this Friday against the one-win Cherokees. Moody is also on the road against Flour Bluff, which is the top team in the South.
The district’s championship game was set Monday. Calallen and Flour Bluff are meeting ay 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 at Wildcat Stadium. The Wildcats lead the North with a 4-0 record, while the Hornets have the best record in the South at 3-0.
The game has added significance for Calallen since it could be the game in which longtime coach Phil Danaher eclipses coach G.A. Moore for the most wins in Texas high school football history. Danaher will tie the record this week with a Calallen win against Corpus Christi Miller.
The following are the currently District 30-5A Zone Standings. The record by each team indicate the team’s zone record and overall season record:
Flour Bluff 3-0/4-4
Veterans Memorial 0-3/3-5
