A week before the big boys take the field for the start of August football drills, some of the youngest football players in Alice will be on the practice field for what amounts to an introduction to the Coyote football program.

The Alice Coyote Summer Football Camp is Tuesday and Wednesday at the Alice High School practice fields. Registration for the camp is from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at the athletic department office. The fee for the camp is $15 per youngster. Late registration is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the school’s weight room. Late registration is $25 per child.

The camp is for third graders to incoming freshmen.

The overall price of the camp is down this year, a move that Alice coach Justen Evans said is meant to make the camp affordable for any youngster who wants to attend.

“We just want to give back to the community and pour something back into the town as coaches,” he said. “We’re not using it as a fundraiser or money-maker. What we are charging is just to pay for the shirts and the camp."

The camp is from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Campers are meeting at the weight room on both mornings.

The camp will feature individual drills, team drills, specialty drills, individual competition, team competition and free football play.

Evans said he hopes coaches and the players of tomorrow can begin to form a bond.

“We want them to get to know our names and faces and we want to let them know that we’ll be following them from elementary to high school and working with them,” he said. “We want them to know who we are and what it is to be an Alice Coyote.”

The campers will receive the fundamentals of football, weight lifting and running. The campers will also receive drinks, snacks, a T-shirt and a certificate.

The camp staff includes Evans, offensive coordinator Damian Shipley, defensive coordinator Eric John, special teams coordinator Colin Williams and coaches Arturo Barrios, Pete Trevino III, Ryan Ueckert, Marco Gonzalez, Juan Rivadeneyra, Jason Kress, Rene Chavez, Cristel Gonzalez, Frank Galvan, Leonard Tipton, James Fly, Matthew Leal, Benny Barrera, Robert Martinez, Roman Vela, Frank Rios and Trent Perkins.
