ABILENE — There was a moment Saturday afternoon that L.A. Gonzalez had been working for four years.
It came when he finally was able to hang a gold medal around his neck at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Championship.
Gonzalez, a senior at Alice High School, won 114-pound weight class in Div. 1, or the big school division, Saturday in Abilene. When it was all over and in the books, it wasn't even close. Gonzalez won the weight class by 45 pounds.
Gonzalez, who was second at regionals, won the weight class with a 1,035-pound weight total. He had a 425-pound squat, a 215-pound bench press and a dead lift of 395.
With his points alone, Alice place eighth in the team standings.
Cody Juarez of Alice lifted in the same weight class, but did not post a total.
In the 148-pound weight class, Alice's Alex Gonzalez was seventh and Oscar Camarillo was ninth.
