If the Alice Lady Coyotes final meet of the regular season was any indication of how well the team might do at regionals on Saturday, several girls could be lifting at the state powerlifting meet as well.

Alice has eight lifters in the weekend’s Region 5, Division I powerlifting meet at Weslaco East High School. The top finishers in each weight class or those lifters who hit a provisional weight total advance to the state meet.

Going in to regionals, Alice’s top lifter is senior Allison Macias, the defending 165-pound state champion. Going into regionals, she is ranked second.

In each of the meets, Macias has earned Best Lifter awards. Her latest was last Saturday when she won the 165-pound weight class in Hebbronville with an impressive 1,050-pound total. Her total included 440-pound squat, a bench press of 210 pounds and a 400-pound deadlift.

Macias is one of eight Alice girls lifting Saturday. The others include Tianna Trujillo and Lourdes Gonzalez in the 97-pound weight class, Cecily Gonzalez and Jasmine Hernandez in the 132-pound weight class, Alexis Estingel in the 148-pound weight class, Chloe Zapata in the 198-pound weight class, Janelle Castillo in the 123-pound weight class.

Zapata also won her weight class at the Hebbronville meet Saturday. She won the 198-pound weight class with a total of 1,030. Her total included a squat of 470 pounds, a 225-pound bench press and a deadlift of 335.

Aside from Macias, Zapata is ranked No. 3 in the region in her weight class. Lordes Gonzalez is fifth and Trujillo is sixth in the 97-pound weight class.
