LAREDO — With much of the team playing in the basketball playoffs last week, the San Diego Lady Vaqueros really didn’t get started on softball until late last week.

Weeks behind every other program around South Texas, the Lady Vaqueros practiced once Friday afternoon and again Monday in preparation for their first game of the season Tuesday.

Two days of practice were seemingly more than enough. The Lady Vaqueros scored 10 runs off 10 hits in a 10-2 victory against Laredo LBJ.

Zalayna Perez led San Diego at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs and a walk. Kayla Oliveira scored three runs in the game. Lianna Vela was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

San Diego used a battery of pitchers. Perez started the game and was given the win. Went two complete innings and was relieved by Oliveira in the third. Marley Martinez pitched the final two innings of the game.

San Diego scored four and led 4-2 after the first inning. They added runs in the third and fourth before scoring four in the seventh.
