For being the beginning of softball’s preseason, there was a lot going on at the Alice Lady Coyote Softball Complex Friday afternoon.

Groups of varsity and junior varsity players went through various stations and drills. Under the direction of second-year varsity coach Janay Gonzalez, the girls worked on the fundamentals like fielding, throwing and hitting in the first official practice of the new season. The team had another similar practice Saturday afternoon.

And if it seems like the program is in a hurry, it’s because they are. In only a week, the team has its first scrimmage of the season.

“This time is very important for us,” Gonzalez said. “We have our first scrimmage on Feb. 4th and we have our first district game on Feb. 16. These couple of weeks are very important for us, because we don’t have much time. We have a lot to work on and we need to come together as a team and build some team chemistry.”

Alice, which won only one game last season, graduated a big group of seniors, so this year’s deep with depend on a handful of new players and underclassmen.

“It’s a rebuilding year for us, but I think we’ll do well,” Gonzalez said. “We have a lot of girls who have been playing on their own, so hopefully we’re ahead.”
