AGUA DULCE — For a game in the middle of January, the match-up between the Agua Dulce girls and Port Aransas was pretty intense.
In fact, with the emotion, aggressiveness and competitiveness displayed between the two, the game had all the makings of a postseason tilt.
However, the only thing on the line Tuesday night was second-place footing in District 31-2A, and that’s what the Lady Longhorns came away with after the 40-37 victory. With a stingy defense and opportunistic offense, Agua Dulce led Port Aransas for much of the night and then held on late to preserve the win.
With the win, Agua Dulce completed the first half of District 31-2A with a 5-1 record. Port Aransas dropped to 4-2. London remains in first with a perfect 6-0 run through their first six district games.
It was a tight ball game, but the difference came in the second half when the Lady Longhorns were able to force a handful of turnovers which Lillie Garza and Lisa Hadnot converted into points. Garza finished the game with 18 points. Handout scored 14.
Agua Dulce coach Jesse Cadena said expected a tough back-and-forth game against the Lady Tarpons.
“Offensively, we’re struggled sometimes this season to get easy baskets, but our defense has done well enough that we’ve produced turnovers which we’ve been able to get some easy layups and jump shots. I think tonight, we just got lucky and scored more points than Port Aransas did. We still have to play them over there, and we’re expecting a tough one there too.”
