SAN DIEGO, Texas - Aurelio "Chico" Aleman, 68, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2007 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He was born in San Diego, Texas, in 1939, and was a star football player and track athlete at his San Diego alma mater. He continued his love of sports as a Golden Gloves boxer while in the U.S. Army.

Aurelio was a hard worker who made a living in Illinois, Arizona and California before returning to San Diego to run the old Las Palmas gas station.

He began shining shoes as a child in the old "centro" of town. He picked cotton as a boy, and as a teen worked for Rainbow Bread, a meat market and a funeral home. He was also a member of several civic organizations.

Aurelio was preceded in death by his parents, Mena and Federico Aleman Jr., both from old Texas families.

He is survived by six children, Mireya (Hector) Lopez, Maritza Andress, Oziel (Debbie) Aleman, Mayelina (Elzy) Aleman, and Melidda Aleman, all of Douglas, Ariz., and Omar (Sandra) Aleman of San Diego, Texas; one sister, Ramona Aleman of San Diego, Texas; an aunt and uncle; 11 grandchildren and many cousins.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2007 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. that same evening.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church in San Diego, Texas. Military graveside services and burial will follow at the San Diego Cemetery.
