SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Valerie Symons Pohlhammer ended her battle with Multiple Sclerosis on Saturday, February 10, 2007. She was born on June 16, 1946 in Sheridan, Wyo., to Floyd and Fay Jackson Elmgren. Her father passed away in 1952 of Polio and her mother married Edgar Symons in 1953. She attended schools in Laramie and Sheridan, Wyo., graduating from Sheridan High School in 1964. She attended Hastings College in Nebraska where she met Jim Pohlhammer, whom she married October 19, 1965. The couple had three daughters, Wendy Moreland, Deedee Schirmer and Kirsten Hale. She graduated from Emporia State University, Kansas, May 1979, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and music was an important part of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in November 2004.
Survivors include her daughters, Wendy (Jim) Moreland of San Antonio, Texas, Deedee (Scott) Schirmer of Laurel, Ind., and Kirsten (Jay) Hale of San Antonio; her parents, Fay and Edgar Symons by Sheridan, Wyo.; brothers, Carl and Darley of Washington, Curt of Sheridan, Wyo., and Bob (Rita) of Cheyenne, Wyo.; sister, Gail, of Milwaukee, Wisc.; an uncle, and several grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in Valerie's name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
