FREER, Texas – Zulema Z. Vargas, 72, a longtime resident of Freer, Texas, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 at her residence after a long illness. She was affectionately known as “Ama” to all her children and grandchildren and helped raise her grandchildren. She enjoyed music, especially Mariachi music and going to dances.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose J. Vargas; her parents, Benito and Beatrice Zamora; two brothers, Mariano Martinez Jr. and Jose Martinez; and a son, Jose Vargas Jr.
She is survived by her children, Rogelio (Melissa) Vargas of San Antonio, Texas, Diana (Juan) Garcia of Laredo, Texas, Rosa Garza of Pflugerville, Texas, Delma (Pedro) Coronel of Austin, Texas, Rudy Vargas of Whichita, Kan., and Ricardo Vargas, Mary Vargas, Amanda Nicole Vargas, all of Freer, Texas; two sisters, Emma Zamora Fuentes of Maverick, Texas, and Beatrice (Paul) Robles of Delphus, Kansas; three brothers, Juan (Oralia) Martinez of Moody, Texas, Mario A. (Juana) Martinez of Assria, Kan., and and Pedro Martinez of Salina, Kansas; 28 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Garza Funeral Home in Freer, Texas, Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Freer, Texas with Father Angel Montano as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Guadalupe Cemetery #3 in Carrizo Springs, Texas.
