Cantu, Killingsworth, Olivares


ALICE, Texas - Rafael G. Cantu Jr., 81, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 5, 2008. He was born to the late Rafael and Josefa Cantu on March 6, 1926. His favorite past time was spending time with his friends at Dena's Restaurant, he was an avid enthusiast of sports, especially of the Alice Coyotes and the New York Yankees. He owned and operated Cantu's Flower Shop along with his wife of 54 years, the late Irene Gonzalez Cantu. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Evangelina Nava; and a brother, Cidonio Cantu.

Survivors include two daughters, Josie (Robert) Garcia and Laura Cantu, both of Alice, Texas; nine grandchildren, Robert (Kristi) Garcia Jr., Liza (Nahum) Jimenez, Daniel Garcia, Jay (Lorena) Sandoval, Adrian J. Garcia, Marco Antonio (Elda) Sandoval, Marissa Garcia, Jose Arnoldo Sandoval and Sarah Garcia; and six great-grandchildren, Robert Garcia, III, Sergio Sandoval, Jacob Sandoval, Natalie Jimenez, Andres Rafael Garcia and Arazelie Jimenez.

A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2008 at Walker-Mora Funeral Home Chapel in Alice. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice with burial following at New Collins Cemetery.

ALICE, Texas - Grace Killingsworth, 89, passed away at her home in Seguin, Texas, on February 4, 2008. She was born February 16, 1918 in Sicily Island, La., to Mamie and Conrad Langston.

Survivors include her four children and spouses, Jack (Liz) Killingsworth and Patty (Stanley) Grossman, all of Alice; Nancy (Kenneth) Zuber of Seguin and Bill (Kathy) Killingsworth of Oklahoma City, Okla.; she is also survived by one brother and one sister, 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 7, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Holmgreen Mortuary in Alice. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2008 at Roselawn Memorial Park, with Bro. Joe Carrales officiating.

Jesus M. Olivares, Jr., 70, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2008. He was born on July 19, 1937 to Jesus M. Olivares Sr. and Sabina Perez Olivares in Alice, Texas. He graduated from Alice High School in 1958 where he met the love of his life, Mary Vasquez. He married her on November 12, 1961. Together they started their business, Olivares Plumbing Service. They closed the business doors only two weeks ago after a successful 35 years of serving customers in Alice and Corpus Christi. Olivares Plumbing in Houston, Texas, continues and is being run by his son, Jay Olivares.

He retired in 1993, from the United States Army National Guard with over 20 years of devoted service with Bravo Company 2nd Battalion 49th Armored Division in Alice, Texas.

He gave hundreds of volunteer hours as a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club. He lived a life "De Colores" through his actions by caring and serving his fellow man with humility and piety. He was a Master Plumber by profession but there was nothing he couldn't repair or build with his hands, He enjoyed family gatherings and holidays where he loved cooking and playing his accordion. He will forever be remembered as someone who was always happy and joking as well as a loving husband, father and grandfather. His family is grateful to God for his life and for the wonderful years they had with him. He will be deeply missed. His greatest legacy is his treasure, which he called his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Olivares; children, Edie Saavedra and husband Henry, Jesus M. "Jay" Olivares III and wife Helen, and Maricella Olivares Jiron; grandchildren, E.J., Richard, Iliana, John David, Sultana, Ivana, Joviana, Alyssa, Dariana, and Leilani; two brothers and one sister; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 8, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Memory Garden Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, Texas. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Christ The King Catholic Church in Corpus Christi. Interment will follow at New Collins Cemetery in Alice, Texas.
