Jose Omar “Tomate”, “Chamai” Hernandez, 73 a lifetime resident of Benavides, Texas went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 13, 2012 after a sudden illness. He was a graduate of Benavides High School, class of 1960, served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964 and was stationed in Korea. He married Sylvia Garcia in 1966, his wife of 46 years of marriage, and they had three daughters. He briefly worked in the oilfield before his employment with the Corpus Christi Army Depot where he retired after 30 years of service. Jose Omar was a member of the VFW Post # 8585, American Legion Post # 405 of Benavides, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Abelardo and Juanita Hernandez; two brothers, Juan Manuel Hernandez and Ricardo “Riche” Hernandez.

Jose is survived by his wife of 46 years of marriage, Sylvia Hernandez of Benavides, Texas; three daughters, Lorena (Art Barrera) Alvarez of Corpus Chrsiti, Texas; Marisa (David Salinas, Jr.) Hernandez of Ricardo, Texas; Jolinda (Robert Barrera) Hernandez of Ricardo, Texas; one brother, Rogelio (Minerva) Hernandez ; one sister, Alma (Hector) Gallardo; sister-in-law, Evengelina Hernandez; six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Santa Rosa De Lima Catholic Church in Benavides, Texas. Interment will follow at the Benavides Cemetery in Benavides, Texas.
