Margarita O. Gutierrez, "Maggie", 87, made her journey to be with the Lord and her deceased family members on July 24, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was born in Alfred, Texas on March 4, 1930 to her parents, Pedro and Teresa Olivarez.
She was married to Guadalupe D. Gutierrez for 29 years and with their union they were blessed with three children whom they raised in San Diego, Texas. She enjoyed cooking, baking, casino gambling, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and servant to her local parish, St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church.
Margarita graduated from San Diego High School and began her career as a clerk at the Title and Abstract Company in San Diego. She then served as a parent coordinator for the Title I Migrant Program, followed by several years as a devoted and reliable teacher's aide and a substitute teacher until the age of 83 years.
Maggie loved to volunteer and serve her community. One of the organizations she devoted many years to was the school's PTA. group. She was a room mother for all of her children's school years and served as president of the PTA.
She was an active member of the Catholic Daughter of the Americans in San Diego for 43 years. During this time, she served as committee chairperson and Regent for several consecutive terms. In addition Maggie was a Eucharistic Minister for St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church for over 10 years.
Margarita is survived by her children, Margot (Teo) Rios, Alice, Texas; Rachel Gutierrez of Missouri City, Texas; Guadalupe "G.G" (Anna) Gutierrez Jr. of San Diego, Texas; three sisters, Julia O. Garcia of San Diego , Texas; Virginia Rios of San Diego, Texas; Maria Teresa Saenz (Felix) of Falfurrias, Texas; one brother, Rogelio (Thelma) Olivarez of Riverside, California; seven grandchildren, Nikki (Torrey) Guerra, Aaron Almaraz, Marcos Gutierrez, Jacqueline M. Torres, Saul A. (Amanda) Rios, Michael Gutierrez, Matthew (JoAnn) Gutierrez; four great grandchildren, Alexis Andrews, Trent Joaquin Andrews, Judith Alayna Gutierrez, Mina Rae Rios and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at the Garza Funeral Home in San Diego, Texas with a Rosary at 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017 at St. Francis De Paula Catholic Church in San Diego, Texas. Interment will follow at the San Diego Cemetery in San Diego, Texas.
