Local law enforcement officials arrested a Calallen couple on capital murder charges in connection with the death of 21-month-old Texas Ruiz.

On Tuesday, detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department's Family Violence Child Protection Unit obtained capital murder warrants for both Juan Javier Garza and Lorraine D. Rodriguez. Garza, 22, was already in custody in the Nueces County Jail for an alleged injury to a child charge involving Ruiz, CCPD officials said. He was additionally charged with capital murder.

Rodriguez, 24, was arrested by members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force at a location in the 3800 block of U.S. Highway 77 and transported to the Nueces County Jail. She was also charged with capital murder.

On Jan. 1, Corpus Christi police officers were dispatched to the 3700 block of Brookside in Calallen in response to a child who had suffered a seizure. Ruiz was rushed to Driscoll Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide on March 4.
