Next school year, students will report Aug. 27, which is now the earliest possible starting date mandated by the state.

The 2007-2008 calendar was discussed at Monday's Alice ISD school board meeting.

Christmas vacation for students will start with early dismissal Dec. 21, and run until the first day of school for the second semester, which will be Jan. 7. Teachers will come back to school nearly a week earlier on Jan. 2 for a workday and then Jan 3 and 4 for staff development.

Director of Personnel Jerry Cavazos said that although the teachers will be sacrificing some holiday days during Christmas, it was the version of the calendar that the majority of the teachers agreed upon, in order to end the semester before Christmas break.

Another difference in the new calendar is the combining of Spring Break with Easter, which will run from March 17 to the following Monday, March 24, which would be considered the end of the Easter Break and Spring Break.

March 24 was also agreed upon by the board as a make up day, in the event of inclement weather or some other necessary lost day scenario.

The last day of school for the 2007-2008 calendar year will be Friday, May 30.

In other news, Jim Wells County Clerk Ruben Sandoval informed board members of the new election administrator position approved by the county.
