Sophomore pitcher Sirena Martinez was the difference maker for the San Diego Lady Vaqueros Saturday.

While she started only a handful of games for Sam Diego this season, she was the winning pitcher in Game 2 and 3 Saturday afternoon against Riviera in Sinton.

The Lady Vaqueros won the second game of the best-of-three Class 2A playoff series, 7-1.   They came back to win Game 3, 2-1.

Linsey Bernal drove in the deciding run in the fifth inning of Game 3.

San Diego needed to win both games Saturday to advance to the area round of the playoffs after they lost Game 1, 5-4, Friday night.

With her arsenal of pitches, Martinez threw seven innings in Game 2.  San Diego coach Rey Ramirez started her for four and one-third innings in Game 3 before she was relieved by freshman ace Gabby Gonzalez in the fifth.   Gonzalez earned the save in Game 3.

San Diego is playing 2A powerhouse Poth in the area playoffs.  Game 1 of the series is Thursday. The series will continue Saturday.   Times and location have yet to be settled.
