RICARDO - The Kwik Pantry in Ricardo appeared to be open for business as usual Friday morning with the exception of several Kleberg County Sheriff's Deputies walking the parking lot and combing the grassy ditch to the north of the building.
The night before, however, the scene was entirely different - the only gas station in this unincorporated area was bathed in the red and blue flashing lights of multiple law enforcement and emergency medical vehicles, banded by yards of yellow barricade tape and contained one dead body. Kleberg County Chief Deputy Willie Vera said he received the call around 7:30 p.m. Thursday regarding a shooting incident at the Kwik Pantry located on U.S. Highway 77 South and Farm to Market Road 1118. He said that Walter Ronald Long, 38, a resident of Kleberg County entered the store and shot a male victim several times.
Long then fled the scene, but surrendered himself to an off duty Corpus Christi police officer and admitted to the shooting, Vera said.
