The Jim Wells County Sheriff’s Department received notice of a Border Star grant in the amount of $195,350.40 to be used for interdiction and overtime.

This Border Star grant enables law enforcement departments to increase patrol and work interdiction to help curb crimes on the highways.

Since 2008, the sheriff’s department has acquired $336,000 in Border Star grants.

Since then, the department has seized 323 vehicles, recovered 71 stolen vehicles and confiscated more than 9,425 pounds of drugs including marijuana and cocaine.

The grant of $195,350.40 is to be utilized during a six-month period from April 1 to Aug. 31.
