San Diego - San Diego residents were awakened early Sunday morning to loud noises as eight boxcars derailed between Dix and King streets near a curve on the tracks on the west part of town.

Officials said the train cars were carrying grain and corn and no injuries were reported.

The derailment happened about 1 a.m. Sunday as most residents of San Diego were sleeping.

The accident occurred right through five blocks of a residential area and some of the train cars laid on their side only feet away from backyards.

Kansas City Southern crew members worked and welded for several days Sunday and Monday to fix the tracks and get the train back on schedule.

Kansas City Southern community affairs personnel could not be reached Tuesday morning.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, officials said.
