Fifth-grade students at Dubose and Memorial intermediate schools and eighth graders at William Adams Middle School should remember to get plenty of rest this weekend before they return to school Monday to take part in the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) testing this week.

On Monday, the students will take the math portion of TAKS. Tuesday will be the reading TAKS test.

“It starts right away at 8 a.m.,” Dubose Intermediate School counselor Diane Klosterman said. “And, it’s tough because this is the first year I’ve even known that we’ve tested on a Monday. Usually, we don’t start testing until Tuesday, so that’s kind of an interesting change that we’re trying to compensate for.”

Klosterman said she sent out postcards in the mail to remind parents of the testing dates. She said she also handed out bookmarks offering test-taking tips to all of the students.

“It’s just another reminder,” Klosterman said.

Klosterman said the students have been preparing for the TAKS tests throughout the year, especially in the last few weeks as the testing dates drew near.

“It’s been non-stop tutoring and reviews and preparation for them,” she said.

Klosterman said in addition to a good night’s sleep, students should also remember to eat breakfast prior to testing.

Retakes for fifth-grade math and reading TAKS testing are scheduled for May 17 and 18. Summer retakes for both tests are scheduled for June 28 and 29.
