A man with a warrant attempted to flee from a sheriff’s deputy Wednesday and fell while jumping over a fence in the 1800 block of Rosario Street and now claims he broke his leg.
Deputy Ben Belmades chased the individual at about 6 p.m. Wednesday after he tried to make contact with 47-year-old Benito Aranda, who had an active warrant for failure to appear on two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Aranda ran across a residential front yard and tried to jump over a wooden fence when one of the planks broke as he was on top and he fell to the ground.
Belmades immediately handcuffed him.
Aranda claimed he couldn’t stand up because his leg was broken. Belmades lifted him over his shoulder and took the suspect to his patrol unit. The emergency medical service was called and Aranda was taken to the local hospital.
Aranda is still wanted and was not arrested because of his injury to his leg, but will be picked up at a later date, officials said.
Hospital officials said Aranda was not on the register and was not admitted to the hospital.
